I was running Freenas for a long time and had scripts that allowed me to locate a hard drive, but when I went to Scale (and linux) I needed a different way.
I run Aviago LSI 3008 cards in Supermicro chassis. Here is a script that uses SAS3IRCU to locate your controllers, find all drives connected to that controller and give you the option to blink or unblink the drives.
Maybe it can help others!
YMMV
