Hi All

Going to build a NAS for home.

Main tasks/services/features will be:
-plex server (capable of 3 simultaneous encodes at 1080p)
-sabnzbd
-bittorrent client
-couchpotato
-be able to house 5x 2tb hard drives (that I already own)

The hardware I have in mind is:
MB: Asus H97PLUS
CPU: i5 4460
RAM: 8gb of DDR 3 (Non ECC)
HD for OS: Not sure - is a consumer SSD ok or would I get better results with a standard HDD ? Is a USB drive an option?

Some other questions I have:
1) Do I buy an Intel 1gigabit/s NIC (will it give far better results then the onboard realtek) ?
2) I might purchase a Sata expansion card so I can add additional hard drives. Could anyone recommend one?

many thanks everyone

Congratulations. You managed to not read the hardware recommendations thread. Or any of the omnipresent build threads with a small shred (or more) of research put into them.

Reasons why you shouldn't buy that motherboard:
  • Unnecessary crap (audio, graphics, ...)
  • No support for ECC
  • Realtek
  • No server features (IPMI, ...)
Reasons why you should buy that motherboard:
  • Yeah...

No ECC is great to lose all the data. If you don't care about your data, why are you even looking at FreeNAS?

8GB of RAM is inadequate for Plex.

HD for OS: Not sure - is a consumer SSD ok or would I get better results with a standard HDD ? Is a USB drive an option?

This kind of question really bugs me. It shows that you read nothing. Not the FAQ, not the many posts on the forum...

Seriously. Do your research, come back with a properly researched build and I'll be glad to asnwer some questions and/or offer suggestions. If you need a place to start, grab a few random build threads and work from there.

Welcome to the forums!

Please start by reading one of the stickies: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/hardware-recommendations-read-this-first.23069/

You might also want to read up on ECC vs non ECC RAM: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/ecc-vs-non-ecc-ram-and-zfs.15449/

And, links to the FreeNAS documentation can be found here: http://doc.freenas.org/

USB for the OS is fine. Use a quality name brand one, at least 8GB in size.

The non-grumpy version of what I said. Thanks for the diplomacy, gpsguy. I need to replenish mine with some sleep.
