I was starting to look into moving some of my files into the Plex folders and trying to start setting up Sonarr/Radarr etc.

But then I saw it mentioned about security and VPN...about which I am generally clueless.

Any simple/newbie walkthrus VPN and how and why, available?

There are plenty of low-cost VPN services ($5-10/mo). I've been fine with Astraweb using the SSL connection for the past 6 years.

Right now everything I have is on Amazon Drive.

I also had 2 3TB Seagate external drives that had copies of everything and were offsite. 1 failed a couple months ago and the other...I'm worried about (only because the other one failed). I'll get another soon and have it as a separate backup...but I'm not in a rush. I'm pretty confident in Amazon Drive.

Speaking of which...I actually need to get everything off of Amazon Drive...and I've only tested 1 folder of about 300 pictures...but does everything come off as a zip file? Is there a way around that? I'd rather just get the files directly instead of downloading zips and then extracting...

Nothing that's fast enough. Too much traffic on the free ones with flaky connections. pfsense - would be just VPN on your own network on your own hardware - no anonymity (plus you can't VPN into your own network within your own network, you have to be outside your LAN). Torrenting? Yes, get a VPN. Usenet? Just use the provider's SSL connection.

I'll add some finished product pics when it gets to its final location. Still have this behemoth sitting next to my main desk ready to crack open as I still have to finish setup of the 2nd pool using the old disks...

So, a few times the server has shutdown on it's own.

Don't see much about it except when it detects a OS failure, watchdog countdowns and then resets (shuts down?)
Manual for my mobo says this is a jumper for it. Open is disabled (Pin 1-2 was default "Reset").

Disabled is OK, right?

I'm prepared to take my 2 old drives and setup a "new" and separate pool in mirror. But...what should I name it? I don't want to use tank again obviously. Is there a thumb rule? dozer?

Which implies your system locked up, or the dog patting didn't happen because of a bug.

So, disable the watchdog, and maybe you'll be able to workout what's happening, but don't expect it to fit the issue. If it does you have an interesting issue too ;)

No rules other than: do NOT use "pool" or, I think, "freenas". Mine is our initials. Have fun with it.

Any name that could be mistaken for something else is bad. Especially known Unix words like root and ZFS/zpool commands.

I THINK (emphasis on think) that at least one of the times the watchdog kicked in was when I was putzing around in the BIOS, then went to go do something away from the computer
for a while while still in there and when I came back it was off. Maybe the watchdog doesn't get patted in BIOS?

OK, so couple issues today (so much ugh).

1. I have 3 of my 8 drives connected via the

LSI3008 controller for 8 SAS3 (12Gbps) ports; RAID 0,1,10 (I'm pretty sure I flashed to IT mode, but I'm starting to question this...)

using THIS cable

I set up some of those scripts in the Biduel0hm thread, in which at the end, someone updated and put together a zpool/HDD script.
There is one for SATA and the SAS one is not there yet. However...when I run the script, it returns data for all 8 of my drives.
As I understand it, since SAS connected drives return data differently (or something), I should get nothing in my info summary for
the SMART portion. However, da0, da1 and da2 are all returning info. Thoughts?

OK, that's problem 1.

Problem 2: I woke up and checked my email and I had 2 emails:
starting first scrub (since reboot) of pool 'freenas-boot'

and

The boot volume state is ONLINE: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data corruption. Applications may be affected.

and this alert when I go into the GUI:

Is my SSD boot drive SSD having serious problems?

Ok, i think problem 1 is my lack of knowledge. Thought SATA drives connected through a SAS port would act as SAS drives. Problem 2...still a thing
