From the google paper the range is 30 to 40 °C, if you go lower or higher the failure rate rise. It's far worse to go higher than lower.
Did Google ever do a followup?

Another important thing (not in the paper but it's an educated guess) is that precise mechanical systems don't like wide and/or fast temperature changes, so the more stable the temp, the better ;)
Well knowing mechanical devices temp variations are not good. Especially not with precise mechanical devices like hard drives.

Curiously, I read about the Noctua Fan/Supermicro issue before I finished building my build (see my sig). By all rights, I should be experiencing the problem. I was all lined up to do all the necessary hacks to solve it. But when I finished my build and tested things, the fans ran fine. No cycling.

I'm confused.
