Hi all,

I am trying to update my freenas 9.10 o 11. I have written the ISO to a USB which I am able to boot from and even install to a different USB stick. The issue I have is, after booting the USB stick I installed to, I get errors about wrong version of geom, etc. and get dropped to the shell. The message is "/etc/rc/: warning: unable to load kernel module geom_gate." this error is followed by several others. I can post a screen shot

My hardware is Supermicro x9scm-f, 16GB ram, with an intel xenon 1220. The USB stick is a sandisk cruzer 32 gb.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

I can't update via the gui, because my current media is too small.

My current build shows as
Build FreeNAS-9.10.2-U6 (561f0d7a1)

32GB is more than enough. Delete some old boot environments.

Okay, that's different.

Which version of FreeNAS 11? Also, try installing from IPMI with the virtual disc drive - the install medium may have some problems of its own.

Also, did you verify the hash for the image you downloaded?

Also also - you can also attach your new device to the boot pool, remove the old one, tell the boot pool to expand and profit.

The image is FreeNAS-11.1-RELEASE.iso and the hash matches the reference on the download page.

Are there instructions posted anywhere for adding the new USB to the boot pool? From what I can tell there isn't a GUI option to do this in 9.10.2.

Thanks,

This will leave the user with a mirrored configuration. How do they remove the mirror if they only want to run on a single USB Flash Drive?

I guess I don't understand this error message, basically why you are getting it, or maybe more of when you are getting it.

So you install 11.1 on a new USB Flash Drive and you boot it up, this is a clean install, but it fails. What are you not telling us? Did you boot it up one time and then followed the directions to configure the system and import your pool or did you cancel out of it, or did you get this error on the very first boot andf you cannot make it work at all? Based on what you have stated presently I have to assume it failed on the very first boot and you never got to a configuration screen.

This data is very important becasue if you cannot make this work from the initial boot then you have a problem and I'd try a different Flash drive.

When you have a mirrored boot pool, you'll get a Detach button as well, allowing you to remove a device from the mirror.

Guess I've never seen that since I don't use mirrors. Thanks for that and I'm sure the OP will appreciate that good bit of knowledge.

Yeah, they have the boot device mirroring pretty well implemented. Pity they haven't bothered to implement adding/removing devices for the data pools.

I was able to add the drive to the boot pool and it finished resilvering. However, now when I apply the update, it says it will reboot and never does. It also continues to show the updates as pending. How can I trouble shoot this?

Thanks,

I am getting a message about device da0 (my sandisk 32gb)

It is showing the below on the console:

GEOM: da0: The primary GPT table is corrupt or invalid.

I managed to correct the issue above. Now I have the below in the console:

Am I reading correctly that freenas is trying to install the 32 bit version?
