My hood lost power yesterday and it came back in an hour or so. I came back to find my freeNAS completely off so I powered it on.

This AM, my local security email showed:

> CPU: AMD A4-6300 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics (3700.06-MHz K8-class CPU)
> Timecounter "TSC-low" frequency 1850030743 Hz quality 1000
> WARNING: /data was not properly dismounted

which I believe is 100% about the power off.

So far I did a scrub and see no issues disk issues and while I contemplate a small UPS, I believe this is all par for the course?

"par for the course" varies widely. Some people will get your message and nothing else while others will have an unbootable USB stick.

Indeed our mileages do vary.

I would take an unbootable USB over a corrupted disk all day every day, but thankfully no disk issues after a series of tests.

Important point is that freeNAS is not a viable backup solution but since our mileage does vary we need to have means to fix what broke. Luckily for me, nothing (so far).

Emergency kit includes:
1. 2 spare drives
2. Weekly backup of config file
3. Incremental crashplan backups
4. Spare SATA wires

I don't think spare mobos and cpus are viable so the above should work well.

There's a How-To guide on checking the consistency of your config file every night that I wrote. You could use it's command to determine if the config file is corrupt or not. You know, just to make sure it's still okay. ;)
