Hello,

If you're using desktop quality drives, will enabling Advanced Power Management and Standby help the drives to be at a lower temperature, thereby increasing their chances of longevity? Or will this do the opposite? Will this also affect performance?

I am configuring a server to hold backups, so most of the day the drives won't be written to.

If the drives get hot when in use, then colder when in standby, I would say that to be very bad.
Variation in temperature will cause wear and tear over time. I'd rather have a slightly higher temperature than a changing one (unless very slow and not too much).

Fix the heat problem first if that is what you have.
