Hello, somewhat of a newbie question here.

Trying to install portsnap on main freenas OS and, I understand from reading elsewhere that portsnap comes installed inside jails, however, I am trying to install xmbmon to monitor system temps. Unless xmbmon can be installed inside a jail and still access the main system, I need to install inside the Freenas OS itself.

Following this guys thread and install instructions (http://www.freshports.org/sysutils/xmbmon/) I need to install from /usr/ports/sysutils/xmbmon directory.

I have tried several other methods (pkg install, etc, etc) but no luck. xmbmon is not available to auto download from a repo any where, which would be much easier.

Anyways, looking for some expert help on how to get portsnap installed to then install xmbmon, or if there is another way to get xmbmon installed?

Thanks

You should not install ANYTHING on the freenas OS. Always use jails
This ^, you don't install packages to the base os. If you want to do that you install vanilla bsd.

Thanks. Still a little confused by the steps I was following from this guys site: http://sourceforge.net/p/freenas-tempreport/wiki/Install/

He states to install to the FreeNAS filesystem and does not specify a jail. I am assuming this is due to the main filesystem having access to the hardware for monitoring.........

Guess I could install xmbmon in a jail, but the temp report has you got to the freenas hostname:33380 to view the report.........

What that person is doing is not supported and shouldn't be done. They are also using an older version of freenas.
