Pool Offline SOS

Hello Team,

I am stuck in a typical situation. I setup FreeNAS 11.3-U4.1 recently (4 days ago) on a HP Elite SFF 8100 (hardware config included in the screenshot). The box was kept at a temporary location to setup before moving to its final resting place. Everything was working fine. I had setup the pool and installed the Plex Media Server Plugin. Loaded 7 GB of temporary data on the pool for testing. All is working fine.

Then I performed a clean shutdown from the web GUI and moved the box to its final resting place.

Hardware wise the only change was the addition for a network switch (please see the network diagram) from which FreeNAS receives the IP (yes, I am using DHCP). Not even the location of the ports connectors changed. I boot the box and the only pool I had is now offline.

Trawling through the other threads I did run some shell commands like gpart show and zpool status -v. But I am no expert in FreeNAS or Free BSD and cannot think why this would happen.

Please see the attached screenshots. Could you please help?

I really appreciate the time taken to respond. Thanks in advance.

You can connect to the system via the webUI and DHCP address. .. so it doesn't appear to be a networking issue. The two drives appear to be unused and not in the pool. Is this aligned with your view of the situation?

Yes, that is correct. Before physically moving the box, I had the drives in the pool and had actual data stored on them. Also installed the PlexMediaServer plugin and used the Plex app on my phone to access the data outside the network via cloud.

I can't see you've done anything wrong.. except physically move the box. Has something been knocked loose?

After that it's a process of re-importing the pool... unless others have a better idea.

Those 2TB disks are EFAX... that's SMR, so you are going to have problems at some point if not already.

Thanks guys and I apologize for the late response. Been a bit busy at work lately. I am sorry, created a new pool instead of trying to recover the old pool and since then having multiple issues. Today I tried to store my AWS credentials and that gave an error, that I am trying to write a read only file. Pools are showing at random, etc. Multiple issues along the way and I believe I might have corrupted the base settings somehow. Is there a way to recover it without fresh install? Tried resetting to system default but no luck either. thanks in advance.

i hope you have a backup of your NAS. First of all get rid of the SMR drives..those will continue to cause issues..especially during times of high usage like resilvers. Also since the tracks are overlapping in an SMR situation it's entirely possible the heads got bumped in transit and "lost" their tracking info needed to keep the overlapping data tracks properly aligned(seen quite a few laptops with smr drives drop like this). IMO your data might be totally gone..and I would get non-smr drives going forward.

Thanks for your reply. Looks like I am starting again.

Losing data is not an issue as it was dummy data, once everything is up and running, I will be moving real data over. I will inform, if I run into roadblocks. Thank you for the assistance team.

You can contact WD about the SMR drives and let them know you are having ZFS issues......
