Pool degraded status after drive replacement

Hi everyone.

I recently took over the management of a TrueNas at a new workplace and I don't really have a lot of experience with it.

We had a drive that failed and I managed to replace it without a problem. However, somewhere while the resilver process I received an error: "Pool POOL-A state is DEGRADED: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data corruption. Applications may be affected" and it shows all but the replaced drive as Degraded. There are 8 drives in the pool. Could it be that they actually all need replacement all of a sudden? We had no prior errors.
Furthermore is there and advanced error status report where I could take a look at what exactly is wrong with the disks?

Second question is regarding the console output. I am trying to do a zpool-status -v to list all the corrupted files, but I can't seem to scroll to the top of the list, is there a way to do this?

Thank you for any help and kind regards, Matic

Please post the output of zpool status -v for a start.

I hope this part is enough?

status: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data
    corruption. Applications may be affected.
action: Restore the file in question if possible. Otherwise restore the
    entire pool from backup.

OK, so "something" is completely wrong with your hardware.

In the current state your data is toast. So you need to take careful steps, one each.

Let's start with camcontrol devlist and if the disks are present, a smartctl -a for each disk device. Also console error messages and the output of dmesg as well as the file /var/run/dmesg.boot.

Hi.
First, quick update: all the drives in Pool-A now show degraded even the one that I replaced (the only one that showed: ONLINE status).

Code:
camcontrol devlist
showes all the drives indeed. I should mention I also have another two Pools that for now, don't show any problems.
Could you tell me a bit more about
Code:
smartctl -a
? How I would do it for individual drives. I cant seem to find anything regarding it on https://www.truenas.com/docs/.
Also, currently there is scrub process running for this pool, should I wait with the next steps till it finishes or can a proceed regardless?

smartctl -a /dev/da0 for example.

I don't have any more time today, so someone else will have to step in. I honestly wonder why the scrub is still running with all the disks marked as degraded. I would cancel the scrub so not to put unnecessary stress on the devices at the moment.
With all 8 disks failing simultaneously there is something fishy about, HBA, cabling or backplane ..

HTH,
Patrick

Hi.

Patrick thanks for you input so far!

For the sake of not posting the info of all 24 drives I chose 3. The one on the degraded pool, the new drive on the degraded pool and just to compare another drive on non-degraded pool. I don't really know what to make of this:

A drive on degraded pool:

So the drives' self assessment seems to be saying "I'm ok". I'm a bit confused by the raw values of read_error_rate and seek_error_rate, but don't know how to interpret them, either.

What about dmesg? /var/log/messages? Any disk related errors reported by the kernel?

With all 8 disks failing simultaneously there is something fishy about, HBA, cabling or backplane

Bingo, exactly.

Cable and/or port and/or controller and/or RAM?

I doubt all the drives suddenly failed at the exact same time. Something else is amiss.

Not entirely relevant, but I had a similar issue on my desktop PC in which the drive passed its self-assessment, and passed the short and extended SMART tests. Yet I kept getting BSODs and intermittent reboots would claim there was no drive available. (The BIOS would show no such drive exists, but then sometimes with a reboot or shutdown, it would reappear.)

Relocating it to a separate SATA port completely resolved the issue indefinitely.

Hi everyone. First I would like to thank everyone for kind explanation and help. I managed to learn a lot.

At the end I don't know what exactly went wrong but since we were lucky enough to have the backup of the data I choose to delete and recreate the pool all together. It seems to work fine now. And I see that my predecessor used raidz1 and since I had the chance to remake the pool I opt for raidz2 which should make it safer.
I'll wait till tomorrow to see if anything comes up, if not I'll start to copy the data back to the truenas.

Thanks again and wishing you nice holidays!
