Pool Advice

Hello,

This is my first NAS Build, mainly for Plex Music/Movies/TV Streaming.

The machine is up and running so won't repeat the build spec.

I have one pool which comprises of two hdd of 1tb and 2tb respectively. Both are striped drives. I appreciate this is a less than perfect approach but wanted to test the system was working in terms of streaming before I set up other pools etc.

Now that this pool is working. I'm thinking of purchasing further HDD's and creating further pools as follows:

Pool 1 - 2 x 4TB HDD's mirrored so effectively 1 x 4TB HDD backed up - Music only
Pool 2 - 2 x 10TB HDD's mirrored so effectively 1 x 10TB HDD backed up - Movies and TV shows only

In each pool I would be using only 80% of the memory of each HDD as per the do not exceed 80% pool rule.

The current pool I have would be removed and the music copied onto Pool 1 above.

I was just wondering whether this is the correct way to approach this. I'm thinking that separating the pools as per media would preserve the drives longer.

Any downsides to my idea? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thank You in advance.

You wouldn't need to remove the current pool, you could just mirror one of the new drives to the current striped VDEV in the pool and then replace it with the second, then create your other pool and copy/move whatever you want to it.

Separate your data as you please. I don't know if there will be enough difference in your use of the 2 pools to make a difference over time, so can't comment either way on that.
