Yes and no. Yes because it's part of FreeNAS. But the problem is there's literally 24000 packages you can install in the FreeNAS jail. So the question is "do we expand the forums to cover everything or just not allow it?" and the easier answer is to just not allow it. ;)

Ok I understand, but still - it feels like you're shutting down a valid discussion, as I'm sure I'm not the only person who would like to know how to upgrade my Plex plugin to run the Plexpass version instead of the publicly available one, which I had assumed included you?

At least, if there is a plexpass version for FreeBSD I definitely want to know

All I'm trying to do is give back to the community, so the next time someone looks up how to run the plexpass version in freenas they'll end up here in the freenas forums, instead of some random blog - provided this method is successful. The other option would be to make a plexpass server PBI, and I don't even know where to begin with that endeavor, let alone being the right guy to take it on :p

Ok.. and the answer to your question is:

"Exactly the same as you would in FreeBSD."

And when someone shows up and ask how to install ProgramX, ProgramY, and ProgramZ, the answers are always the same...

"Exactly the same as you would in FreeBSD."

There's literally nothing particularly special to the jail. So why is the FreeNAS forums the best place for the question to be asked? The Plex forums literally have guides to installing Plex on FreeBSD. That's where I found some simple instructions for installing it myself. So again, our support line ends with how to do stuff inside the jail. We provide the jail framework and we host the PBIs(but not necessarily are the creators of the PBIs). Why would we suddenly expand our questions to include every possible question about every single package. It could quickly turn into "I installed apache, how do I set it up" and a thousand other questions. Literally, at that poing this place might as well be a FreeBSD forum. The total number of moderators and admins is less than 10. Clearly we are not capable of handling the workload that revolves around every single questions that can possibly be asked in a jail.

Would you call up VMWare and ask how to install Microsoft Word on your Windows 7 guest? That is, quite literally, what you are asking here. VMWare doesn't provide how to install Microsoft Word. They'd probably laugh at you and hang up. We won't laugh at you, but we don't support it.

So yes, please take your question to whatever support structure is appropriate for Plex. If/when you think there's a problem with the jail framework feel free to ask about it. That's the code we own. We don't own Plex and we don't care what you install in it.

Hence why I was hoping for community support, hoping other people that have already traveled this path might have something useful to chip in with - and if they didn't, then I was hoping I'd have something useful to contribute back with if I was successful.

It's all about the contributing - if people don't contribute, the forum would essentially be dead save for the less then 10 mods/admins struggling to answer everything themselves. Hell that's why I pm'd someone a code for a free year of Crashplan - so that a better walkthrough on how to set it up could be made. I admit I was selfish in that, hoping to get something out of it, but overall - who would benefit the most out of that? Not me, not the guy with a free year of CP - but the community as a whole.

And it's not like I pm'd a mod/admin for help - I know they have a ton of stuff to deal with on a community forum this large. However ....

I understand - message received loud and clear. Aloha sir.

The reason I left your question up was because someone might have an answer. I was simply trying to nudge you to where you *will* get an answer... the plex forums. I saw your question and I was pretty confident the answer isn't going to be provided here in a reasonable period of time.

Thank you for your contributions. I too will seek an alternative update path for Plex (and PlexPass) as the PBI/FreeNAS plugin path has been amazingly unpredictable. I'm going to sift through the Plex forums but if you happen to come across a nice write up, please send it my way.

If you read the announcement of the plex pbi there's a script that retrieves the latest version from plexpass and updates it... all automatically.

Yeah if we could get a link to that post we could probably lock this thread. I found a way to manually update but I'd love a script.

Awesome,
for anyone coming across this page:
1) download PMS_Updater folder from https://github.com/mstinaff/PMS_Updater
2) sftp'd the folder to freeness
3) moved it to /root of my jail (/mnt/<MY_NAS_VOLUME>/jails/<MY_PLEX_PBI>/root)
4) then in the freenas webpage jails tab, i clicked the shell button
5) changed file permissions for the script (chmod 755 /root/PMS_Updater-master/PMS_Updater.sh)
6) and then ran the scrip ./root/PMS_Updater-master/PMS_Updater.sh -u <MY_PLEXPASS_USERNAME> -p <MY_PLEXPASS_PASSWORD> -a -v
the plugin page says the jail is public version but the pled web management page says 0.9.9.10
