Is it possible to install Plex (via the plugin) so that it uses an existing directory which is currently an SMB share as a media pool?

Very possible. Just create a mount point for the plugin, with the media dataset as the source.

The plugin installed into a jail. When should I choose the media dataset as the source?

Click the > at the right of the jail to expand it. Shut it down, and click the Mount Points button to define where the media dataset should appear inside the jail's file system. On the next start of the jail, the media dataset should be available. Note, you may need to create user/group IDs inside the jail matching those used outside the jail so UID/GIDs make sense. You may also need to tweak permissions outside the jail so things work properly.

Hello, I’m trying to follow what you said. I somehow lost my Raid-Z pool because a hard drive died. I lost all of my Phex Movies and TV Shows. I went from FreeNas to the latest version of TrueNas Core. I installed Plex in TryeBas with mount points. I also enabled SMB for a windows share like I used in the past where I have Plex Movies and Plex TV shows that I can copy files back to but when I launch the Plex web console shown in TrueNas, I can only see the mount points inside the Jail. Whatever I did previously with FreeNas, the movies and shows that I copy to the SMB share that is from TrueNas show up on my Plex app on my tv which show the Plex Server name from TrueNas while all the movies/shows are stored on folders on the SMB share. Not sure if I pointed to the TrueNas Plex server from my Windows 10 PC which allowed me to point to the SMB shares. It worked great before my hard drive died and killed my previous Raid-Z pool on FreeNas. Any clarification or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
