I'm planning on buying something like a Dell R6/R7 series server for upgrading my Truenas. I'm currently using an i5-3450 and 6x3.5" HDDs.
I need a little advice on what way to go for additional storage if I go down that route. with my current build I've heard the way would be getting a SAS shelf and a couple PCIX HBA adapters in IT mode. But thats getting expensive. If I go down the Dell server route, what options are there for Storage expansions?

You can use any generic external enclosure. I don't have any knowledge of Dell servers or storage shelves. The only external enclosures I have send recently, (and I have NOT been looking), are these, 4 or 8 disks;
You then get a SAS 4e or 8e card, with as short as external cables as you can get to connect the 2 boxes.

The reason for the short cables is so that you can use SATA disks. SAS HBAs will convert a SAS channel into SATA if a SATA device is wired to it. So the need for shorter cables.
