permissions from client

If i try to set my permissions from a windows 7 client via the hostname, it does not work.
if i try it using the ip address. it does work.

So if i do a \\freenas and then right click on a share and try to set the permissions, it fails.
but if i do a \\192.168.2.101 and then right click on a share and set the permissions, it works fine.
If i ping freenas it does resolve to the correct IP
any idea what's up?

edit: when it ask's for a users name that has permission to do this.
if i do freenas\user
pw
= fail
If i do
\\192.168.2.101\user
pw
= works

just wanted to throw that out there.
