I am thinking about building a small NAS
wondering first if I can use one of these 3.0 cards and have it
work properly
I have a few usb 3.0 drives i'd like to use with it

USB3 falls into one of two categories. It either isn't supported at all, or supported at USB2 speeds.

I suggest you read around before asking questions with answers that are readily available...

That said, two points:

  • PCI-e[express] is something completely different from PCI-X (You probably mean PCI-e, since I've never seen a PCI-X USB 3.0 card)
  • USB 3.0 is poorly supported under FreeNAS, making any expansion card a waste of time and money, especially because USB has very limited uses in FreeNAS (long-term storage isn't one of them)
