Well I just solved a similar problem by setting the permissions on a share, using one of the Windows clients, not the Freenas server the share is on, to readable by 'everyone'. It was already readable by the 'guest' group, but that seemed not to work. Worth a try?

@rogerh, Sorry for the delay. Ran around preparing for a blizzard, that didn't show... If you mean setting the CIFS to readable by everyone, I already tried that. I also added to laptops to the network and those too had no problem seeing the server. I think it must be a hardware problem with this particular PC.
