There are several settings that deal with a forest and the defaults assume one domain. What are your configurations for those settings?
That was it. I missed the "Obey pam restrictions" setting because the message tip was not obvious to me: "This parameter controls whether or not Samba should obey PAM's account and session management directives". But when I seen the description here: http://doc.freenas.org/9.3/freenas_services.html?highlight=forest, it made perfect sense. "uncheck this box to allow cross-domain authentication, to allow users and groups to be managed on another forest, or to allow permissions to be delegated from active directory users and groups to domain admins on another forest"

Might I suggest the message tip be changed to what it says on that above web page to help anyone else it may be unclear to?
