I've just completed building my FreeNAS box. It has 12x1TB drives, four attached to the onboard Intel SATA controller and eight attached to a Highpoint 2720SGL. On first boot I was missing a number of drives on the Highpoint controller, so I booted into the GPARTED LiveCD distribution which saw all of the drives. In GPARTED I initialized each drive with a new GPT partition table which seemed to work correctly, i.e. it didn't give any error messages. When I restarted FreeNAS, the volume manager saw 10 of the 12 drives, with the two missing drives on the Highpoint controller. The output from the "glabel status" command is:

Can anybody see what I might be doing wrong, or suggest additional commands that I can use to diagnose the problem with the two missing drives?

Gparted is a LINUX tool, FreeBSD/FreeNAS are not Linux. So being that it was Linux, it will have a different kernel and drivers.

You need to post the version of FreeNAS you're using. If I remember, the latest 8.3 will have more recent Highpoint drivers that Noobsauce80 made a post about.

You can try camcontrol devlist

There is also this blog post with useful commands for diagnosing/managing disks in FreeNAS.

hi nik - this might sound very trivial but i was having the same issue - it was as simple as a power plug and SATA cable mis-connection. Just double check those --- my new propbem after ideniftying all teh drives is - wrong capacities

4 X 1TB * = *4
3X 2TB*= *6
2X 3TB *= *6
1X * 750GB = *750 GB *

16TB physical*
-3tb overhead (in theory)

i should end up at least with 12 TB OR 10TB ---

BUT WHATS SHOWING under
RAIDZ IS 5.6TB*and
under RAIDZ2 5.3TB
