These drives (smart tests shown below) are part of a test platform contained in my new CSE-836 chassis build.
I purchased 16 used/refurbished drives (40GB) for <$3 each for the intended purpose of testing the backplane.
I just recently set up SMART testing a couple of weeks ago and logged in to SSH when the forum went down
around lunch time today (I was bored). I was shocked to see some of the drives have a huge number for atribute #9
I'm interested to see the Brand Names/Model Numbers that will surface in the responses,
come on, dig out those oldies but goodies!
Can anyone beat my 6 MILLION hours?
You must run a passed SMART test (long or short) in order to have bragging rights. Let's have some fun! Here's mine...

Something is very wrong with those smart results... There's only 8760 hours in a year. So your 6 million+ hours drive has been in service for more than 685 years o_O

Meh, best I can do is 65K hours on an old Seagate. It's currently residing in my pfsense rig. I'm going to run it til it dies. :D

Something is very wrong with those smart results... There's only 8760 hours in a year. So your 6 million+ hours drive has been in service for more than 685 years o_O
Dude, you are such a buzzkill, could you have just waited until some of these geeks went through the trouble of
digging through some boxes in the basement before showing us how smart you are? I bet your really fun at a party...;)

I'm guessing that Relativistic Time Dilation is involved... Perhaps the drives were accelerated to near the speed-of-light?

Even before I got to the second posting I was thinking that the numbers had to have been edited just a bit. Either you're late or too early for April 1st.

Perhaps the figure stated is minutes, instead of hours?
6541445 min. / 60 = 109,024 hrs. / 8760 hrs per year = 12.45 years ???

No editing here, no kidding, I'll post a screen shot. Stand by...

Makes sense for 40GB drives. That would also make them very early SATA drives, presumably still using PATA to SATA bridges and PATA drive controllers.

Do I sense some skepticism Mark?

These drives were first available (according to my research) in April, 2005.
The #9 attribute almost certainly has to be minutes. I'm gonna shut down the server later and see if I can pull the
drive and post a pic of the label, I'm curious to see the date of manufacture now.

It's confirmed! the two results below show time stamp and the difference in the Power On Hours results
show that this Samsung Spinpoint model shows minutes, NOT hours. I guess I don't have to call the Guinness

I had a 72GB SCSI drive in a Sun server that was in service 8.5 years. Finally had to take it
down so I could replace the old data disk that failed years ago. Then use it to mirror the OS.

Edit: Forgot to mention, it was a Seagate drive... Back then they made solid SCSI & Fibre
Channel drives.

Dave, when are you going to run the SMART Long test on that drive? Love to see if it passes. But that is impressive, over 12 years of power on time. Was this drive actually an active drive or just something in a standby capacity, sitting there and waiting? Do you know if it was spinning the entire time it had power applied as well? Just curious.

I know nothing of the drive's use history as it was purchased from Microcenter as a refurbished unit for less than $3.00

I wanted to test my new 16 bay SuperMicro chassis' backplane, so I
just bought 16 SATA hard drives and threw them in. I knew going in that the drives were not going to have any value to me, other than making sure the backplane I switched out was fully functional. The 16 drives have served their purpose and now I'm just playing with them.

I will perform a long SMART test in a while and post the output as soon as I complete a few "honey do" tasks for the better half.
