if you buy too cheap, you'll buy twice!!
None of my SD-Cards or CF-Cards were broken over the last 20 years (minimum Sandisk Ultra), some were thrown into basket because they became too small... (4 -16 GB CF/SD-Card isn't really usable in actual DSLRs

There isn't really a good way for us to know that you have a USB storage device that won't be ruined by swap. You can override the safety check though, by going into the shell in the installer, and run SWAP_IS_SAFE=YES /etc/install.sh

Or leave it as is and hoping that 32GB RAM ist enough for a rockstable NAS without SWAP.

It most certainly is. System will use around 4GiB, the rest is ARC. If you're using bhyve VMs, set arc.max accordingly to have room for what they need.

Since I built this system, whenever I check memory, it's "Swap 2048M Total, 2048M Free"

Code:
Mem: 280M Active, 2740M Inact, 23G Wired, 4871M Free
ARC: 20G Total, 4370M MFU, 15G MRU, 10M Anon, 33M Header, 821M Other
     18G Compressed, 19G Uncompressed, 1.03:1 Ratio
Swap: 2048M Total, 2048M Free

I'm not sure what I'd need to do to start eating into swap. Set arc.max incorrectly? But even then I expect the kernel would attempt to adjust to my RAM use.

Doesn't FreeBSD swap out idle processes anymore? Like getty and comrades?
