I use iSCSI on my freenas box.
info:
Build FreeNAS-8.3.0-RELEASE-p1-x64 (r12825)
Platform Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU G530 @ 2.40GHz
Memory 8159MB
System Time Sat Mar 09 16:24:39 EST 2013
Uptime 4:24PM up 16:16, 0 users
Load Average 0.01, 0.03, 0.04

The graph to show info about RAM always seems to be free. You can see based on my traffic that it is being used.
This is normal, right?

Are you using ZFS? That's the serious RAM hog of a FreeNAS system, otherwise a simple UFS and iSCSI setup will happily run in 256meg.

Mind you, the cache seems very low. Does UFS caching show up in that stat?

found in the iscsi docs that when using device extents, no caching is normal. So thats why I dont see my RAM maxed out.

That makes good sense - all caching is at the far end. Funny to see a FreeNAS box with way too much RAM!

Whats funny to me are the tutorials Ive found that use device extends but they also set up UFS/ZFS and use the NFS service. None of which I had to do.

I still have good write/read speeds. In the two raid0 volumes I made I have seen up to 800Mb/s transfers.
