I ran FreeNAS 8.0.2 for a long time until the USB stick became faulty and it wouldn't boot after a power failure.

I installed FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201508250051 on a new USB stick and imported the existing unencrypted volume without issues. The volume manager shows 8.8 TiB total space with 229 Gib free space. However, the imported ZFS volume shows 8.8TiB total space and with 0 GiB space available.

When mapped under CIFS shares, I cannot do anything as the OS complains that the disk is full.

How can I get the ZFS volume to access the free storage space?

Your pool is 98% full. It should really not be more than 80% full. FreeNAS 9.3 added some mechanisms to prevent you from filling the pool completely, and it looks like you've run into one of them.

Assuming you didn't upgrade your pool, I would do a fresh install of 8.20 on a different flash drive. You can download older versions from: http://download.freenas.org/

Then work on freeing up space on your pool.
