Can anyone shed some light on this please. I have set up email account in Freenas and every night at 3am I get the email report, however it states: etc/defaults/periodic.conf: or : not found - Odd thing is I can the said file in that directory. Short of doing a fresh install I'm lost as I'm not running any scripts.

Thanks John

Thanks. Just to clarify whether this is a bug or not, can you please paste the exact lines from /var/log/messages dealing with periodic?

The 3am nightly activity is to be expected, it runs the security checks on the system and emails the root email account if it finds an issue.

yes no problem, this is all I get in email: /etc/defaults/periodic.conf: or: not found

I have reinstalled this afternoon and will report here tomorrow morning, hoping I have fixed the problem. Learning by the minute.

Thanks, John

Well this morning I'm getting the same email: /etc/defaults/periodic.conf: or: not found I have checked the file in that folder and also in /conf/base/etc/defaults/periodic.conf and both are exactly the same. If I just make a new USB stick and use it without installing my nightly config file, how can I get my ZFS volume back as I don't want to lose the current files on there.

Thanks John

Can you clarify what you mean by "nightly config file"? There is no "nightly" config file?

Cyberjock I have set up a "cron" job that backups/ save my config file. Saves me from pressing "save config" in webgui system/settings/saveconfig.

Might be more useful to say "backup config file" as "nightly config file" is horribly inaccurate.

As for getting your data mounted without using the config file read the FreeNAS manual section on importing pools.

cyberjock, firstly point taken about config file name I have noted that. Secondly yes I know all about the manual and I understand that reading it helps, however there is more than enough knowledge on this forum to help me in my hour of need without me trawling through a manual. I have read many of your replies to other be them "newbe's" or whom ever and at times your are the most helpful guy on here and other times downright rude.
What I mean by that is yes one should read the user manual, however the whole idea of a forum is to help others, without the need to point them at a manual. There would be more people happy to use this forum if it was a little but more helpful. At 56/57 years old I have helped many people in my life as an instructor/teacher by passing on my knowledge and understanding NOT pointing them to a user manual when they need help. Never mind I'm sure I will find the answer somehow. I do not want to get into a slanging match with you over this just stating my point of view.

Thank you for our time.

Well, there's 2 problems with not trawling through the manual...

1. You don't know what oyu might be doing wrong.
2. Most of us experienced users *want* users to use the manual. Having 5000 posts on the same topic(which is exactly what we have in this forum) isn't useful for anyone.

Personally, anytime I upgrade my server I read through the whole manual.

Read the section titled "auto importing volumes". It addresses your issue.

Mate, that bit I have read and understand, however my orignal post about the nightly email ( or lack of ) is the problem. thank you for the reference point none the less. As I'm onto my 4th beer all will have to wait until tomorrow as needed to unwind after a long day ( no hair left on head )

Thanks John

etc/defaults/periodic.conf: or : not found - is not found? You haven't edited or changed it in anyway? Bad freenas install?? If you make a clean install I would just set everything up fresh..
