NFS vs iSCSI

Hi,

On the FreeNAS documentation page, it is stated that

For performance reasons, iSCSI is preferred to NFS shares when FreeNAS® is installed on ESXi. When considering creating NFS shares on ESXi, read through the performance analysis presented in Running ZFS over NFS as a VMware Store.

Does that apply to me? I have a FreeNAS VM and use PCI passthrough to my storage, which consists of a couple of 8TB disks. I have some NFS shares there. Does the above statement applies to VM storage, or to any storage attached to FreeNAS on ESXi?

depends on whether you share the FreeNas disks back to ESXi (i.e. use it "as a VmWare store").

If yes - then yes.
If no - then no:)

Thanks @Rand. I do mount the share on another VM, but I don't use it as a VMWare store, so I guess this is safe, right? I tested the speed with dd and it was around 400MB/s on a simple 80mb write, so I imagine it's ok.
