Before I get started... It's my understanding that TrueNAS makes it possible to use an old laptop as a storage device. I have an an old laptop, but several of the keys are not working so I got a new laptop. So can I use the old one as a remote storage device, without getting technical on me, please.

Short answer: Not really

TrueNAS works best (practically requires) with higher specifications than you would find on a laptop, let alone an old laptop.

You'd be better off physically removing the internal drive from the old laptop and stick it into a USB adapter to use for storage. (Which I wouldn't trust valuable data to live on, though.)
