Dell Poweredge 2850
LSI controller with six HD
PNY 16GB USB
BIOS will only count the USB as a bootable drive when set to AUTO ( which ends up Floppy Emulation Mode. Hard Disk emulation does not show up as a bootable device ).

When the system boots to the USB drive it hangs with the screen looking like this.

F1 FreeBSD
F2 FreeBSD
F5 Drive 0

F6 PXE
Boot: F1
_

I have tried both front and back USB ports.
Suggestions on what could be causing this?

Have you tried a new / backup usb just in case it's a bad install or something..

I just tried a re-install with another PNY 16GB USB that I have used to install Mint Linux with and got the same results.
There may be an error message on the screen at the end of the install but the menu covers it up.

That is an old server. How much RAM do you have? FreeNAS requires 8 GB for ZFS and 2 GB minimum for UFS.

Also Dell does not list any compatibility with FreeBSD/FreeNAS.

Hi.
I have the same issue and it seem to be an issue that people can´t find a good solution to.
My system is ...
Dell PowerEdge R320
1x Intel Xeon E5-2407 cpu 4 Core 2.20GHz,
16 gig Ram, ECC
8 x 1 TB 7200 rpm Sas drives,
PERC H710 Raid Controller with 512MB NV Cache

I´m trying the USB boot option like recommended but it hangs on....
F1 FreeBSD
F2 FreeBSD
F5 Drive 0

F6 PXE
Boot: F1
_

I have the latest Bios update and can´t seem to find a way to change USB settings
to hard drive like mentioned in some posts on the forum.
I tried the USB stick on another computer ( Asrock mobo, i3 cpu, 4 gig ram ) and it ran
just fine.

Any real idea in the pool ?
