Hoping someone can help with this. Recently setup a Freenas box but performance seemed slow so I grabbed on old box and installed another copy of freenas on it - with some older hard drives. Testing was done from Windows 7 using Robocopy. Didn't used built-in raid on either box - but freenas raid mirror. Both setups using CIFS. See below.

Capture.PNG

Above result is pretty consistent that the new box is ~30% slower than the older crappy box. I tried switching cat5 cables but no dice.

So, what should I try next to figure this out:
1) Replace mobo integrated NIC with standalone NIC card
2) Switch to UFS on the new box? Makes no sense that UFS would be faster?
3) what else?

Strictly CPU load-wise, the difference between UFS and ZFS is immense.

Can you post your ZFS configuration and stuff? What's a dd benchmark of your "new machine"? Have you searched the forums and done any of the stuff in the FAQ and other threads for determine the bottleneck? If so, what were the results. If not, stop and go find the commands and run them.

Are you really using just 1 2TB drive in the FreeNAS Box?

You really didn't provide full system specs for either machine.. so I can't even make a comparison of how well the 2 compare. But I will tell you that trying to compare 2 different machines with one using ZFS and the other UFS is ... pointless. That's apples and oranges.

I was about to edit my post to include that, but I was beat to the punch. What happens if you just copy files to the server like you normally would? Is the performance better?

Some more info
dd benchmarks:
new beefy PC = 12,233,579 bytes/sec
old crappy pc = 66,614,351 bytes/sec

I tried windows copy and similar results in that new beefy PC is slower than old crappy PC.

new beefy PC has 2 2TB SATA drives
old crappy PC has 2 400GB SATA drives

new beefy PC has single ZFS Volume setup with Unix ACL

I can look into Robocopy threads but since dd, robocopy, windows copy are all slower with new beefy PC I think something else is going on.

Any help\suggestion appreciated.

thanks

First, don't say "new beefy PC" when referring to your FreeNAS. This just reduces clarity; "PC" means "personal computer", which is the thing you have a monitor and keyboard on and is probably the network client. A FreeNAS host is a server, even though it may be made out of commodity PC parts.

Second, please answer the questions in post #2, especially "What's a dd benchmark of your "new machine"?" and "provide full system specs", plus I'll add "please run iperf to see what your network throughput is like."

This thread won't go anywhere meaningful without such details.

Ok, some more info below. I'm thinking a ZFS configuration issue?
Thanks

Ok, some more info below. I'm thinking a ZFS configuration issue?
Thanks

DD benchmark
New NAS Box = 1,586,026,648 bytes/sec
Old Nas Box = 70,566,451 bytes/sec

Well, this at least is off. Even modern SSD's aren't that fast. You're seeing some caching and/or ARC effect in there, you didn't run a sufficiently large test.

How much memory is in your box? Take that number and double it. So if you have 8GB, then use 16GB below.

Do "dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/mypool/testfile bs=1073741824 count=16" (the 1073741824 is GB, the count is the number of GB). That's a more-useful write test and it should take a little while. Report those back as write speed. Then do "dd if=/mnt/mypool/testfile of=/dev/null bs=1073741824" for read speeds.

Code:
[root@freenas] /mnt/test# dd if=/mnt/test/file of=/dev/null bs=1073741824
41+1 records in
41+1 records out
44326453248 bytes transferred in 73.621332 secs (602087085 bytes/sec)

That's 602MBytes/sec off a RAIDZ3 of seven drives.

But basically it looks like you've got a Realtek card on that new box, which can be a deal-breaker in any number of ways, because occasionally the hamsters get tired and/or die.

Ok, some more info. Yes, I have 8GB in the new NAS box, only 1GB in the old NAS box.

I heard about NIC issues and that seems like an easy thing to try but does the iperf test above prove it isn't a NIC issue or maybe test above was just when it was working fine?

I followed the syntax you mentioned:

new NAS box
dd write 18,365,021 bytes/sec
dd read 98,800,598 bytes/sec

old NAS box The problem with this test when I tried to write for bs=1073741824 it said "Cannot allocate memory". So, my write command was "dd if=/dev/zero of=ddtest bs=536870912 count=6 "
dd write 58,191,403 bytes/sec
dd read 60,926,190 bytes/sec

The write speed there for the new box is pretty pathetic, and that coupled with a Realtek is going to be a recipe for really bad performance.

A modern 3.5" hard drive is typically capable of writing at maybe 100-150MBytes/sec. Adding ZFS to the mix will reduce that somewhat, but the 18MB/sec is really bad. 99MB/sec read is not outside the range I'd expect to see but may be a bit on the slow side.

What you probably want to do is to do some more careful examination of the hardware. Destroy the pool and then you can do write speed tests on the disk devices to see if maybe one of them is failing, or maybe there's a bad cable or something.

FreeNAS adds swap space to the disks which can be a bit annoying for the next few steps. Get a list of your disk devices via "camcontrol devlist" and be aware that your USB flash stick and all that are likely to be listed. They'll be devices like "da0", "da1", etc. So if you've used them for FreeNAS, the UNIX filenames for the data partitions are "/dev/daXp2" where X are the device numbers you noted. Maybe 1 and 2.

Once there's no pool, you can do the same dd tests on the raw disk devices, like "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/da1p2 bs=1073741824 count=16" which will wipe the first part of da1 with 16GB of zeroes. My guess is that one of your two drives is maybe very slow, meaning maybe a hardware problem or something like that. You kind of have to figure this out yourself to see what's being slow.

ok, I yanked the pool and here are my raw numbers

ada0p2 141,869,952 bytes/sec
ada1p2 122,432,340 bytes/sec

A ran many tests and the above numbers are pretty consistent. Could the difference between the two drives be a source of the problem?

Thanks

Write speeds? That's fairly reasonable for two modern drives of different types. Shouldn't be a problem.

If you tweaked the sysctls or tunables you should get rid of them. Every noob that builds a FreeNAS system thinks they can change a few things and get free performance out of it just like how Windows admins make some registry hacks because "it must help". Windows admins are especially bad at it.

I've never tweaked any of my systems and I can't see why I'd ever need to. You shouldn't need to either with that hardware. The default settings should be just fine.
