1st off i apologize you guys are probably fed up with answering these threads :) ive tried having a read through the other posts to get ideas

currently got a shitty readynas duo v2 ,seems to have a little trouble streaming 1080p with choppy frame rates

so ive decided to build a custom mini pc for the job, just found out about freeNAS and looks as tho it will suit my needs perfectly, my wish list so far is ( dont really have a budget so any better recommendations im open to)

CASE: Cool master elite 110 - cube style mini-itx

CPU: Intel Core i3-4360 Processor

Motherboard: Gigabyte LGA 1150 Intel Z97N IWi-Fi-Bluetooth HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini ITX DDR3 1600 Motherboards GA-Z97N-WIFI

RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) UDIMM Memory BLS2KIT8G3D1609DS1S00/ BLS2CP8G3D1609DS1S00

HDD: if SSD does not make a difference from streaming il just grab 3 x 2TB hdd's

PSU: Corsair CX Series 430 Watt ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Bronze ATX12V/EPS12V 384 Power Supply CX430M

All found on amazon let me know if i need to link the above

will just be a home media center, streaming 1080p (hopefully some 4k in the future),can be streaming upto 3 devices at one time

Do i need a gpu?

Open to any suggestions and thanks for taking the time to look at my build

Soooooo the issues i see here is, the motherboard choice is poor, but you selected a good CPU that supports ECC, but your RAM is a poor choice for lack of ECC. i would suggest grabbing 4-6 hdds of the same size, and make a RAIDz2, using the lovely calculator here you can see what free space youd have if you used 2,3,4,5,6Tb hdds and how many 4-6 hdds. I personally like having 2 40-80Gb SSD's for mirrored boot devices, others like USB drives (good ones!). Alot of users recommend the seasonic over the Corsair psu's so i would go that route, and as for GPU, no no need. Check out the hardware recommendations thread before you make a motherboard, cpu, ram choice , i really like supermicro, asrock is popular as well. Doing with none recommended hardware is a recipe for disaster, and it isnt a disaster that will occur immediately it will slowly crop up and one day youll look for your server on the network, and you wont find it and your data *may* be unrecoverable....

thanks for you reply Darren, going to have a good read now through the recommended hardware thread, il also rethink the motherboard and the ram for ECC

i forgot to also mention it will also be used for usenet downloads aswell ( if freenas supports sabnzbd that is)

im also not familiar with RAIDz2 so il do some research on that as well now

thanks mark

FreeNAS allows you to setup sickrage (TV show downloader) which can use sabnzbd , and there is couchpotato for movies which i think also uses sabnzbd.
