I have an unused HP DC7900 with a couple 1TB drives running FreeNAS from a USB stick. It ran great for a long time. Recently decided to power it off for a while. Now it won't boot. No upgrades were done to my knowledge. It hangs at some "gettytab" messages. I don't think I'm even making it to GRUB.

Any tips?

thanks

Does installing the same version of FreeNAS to another USB stick resolve the issue?

I suspect Dru is on the right track. The /etc/gettytab file may be corrupt (not the first time).
Reinstall the same version of FreeNAS to a new/different USB Flash and then import your system config file, assuming you previously saved it.

eesh. Not only do I not know the exact version, but I don't have a config file. If I just get a version of FN running on the box will it recognize and still be able to use the existing ZFS volume?

Yes, you will just need to import your pool(s).

Phew... got it running. Thanks! It's nice that you can import the ZFS pools. Much more flexible and safe than RAID.
