I apologize for not answering your original question.
Can someone please explain the pros and cons of each?
1. Pros - don't need to spend money.
Cons- likely won't work. Freenas can't mount an iscsi zvol, and use that in a vdev.

You should look into a clustering filesystem like swift or gluster (hopefully coming in Freenas 10). https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/freenas-10-alpha-is-now-released.38534/

I have 30 drives across 3 freenas systems. I want to present them to my local LAN as a single share (NFS, SAMBA, AFP, etc. I don't care).
You need someone capable to investigate Swift, an exciting project and a part of Openstack.

It sounds like what you want may be possible with CEPH (https://ceph.io)
