I've searched the forums, but of the posts I read, it doesn't match up with what I'm curious about.
I'm finally pulling the trigger on a NAS and building myself one in the next few weeks from the post: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/hardware-recommendations-read-this-first.23069/
I plan to buy at least 2x 3TB drives for this NAS. But right now, my HTPC has various identical 1TB drives. Before you assume, no, I don't want to mix the 3TB drives with the 1TB drives in a RAID array. My question is, since I have different "sets" of identical disks, can I make an array for each set?
For example, say I use this motherboard: http://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=C2750D4I#
It comes with 3 different SATA controllers:
Intel® C2750 : 2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s, 4 x SATA2 3.0 Gb/s
Marvell SE9172: 2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s
Marvell SE9230: 4 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s
Assuming that the FreeNAS OS will let me, can I put the 2 3TB drives on the Intel controller, make that a single RAID array and then use the 1TB drives on the Marvell SE9230 controller and have a separate RAID array for that?
I'd really hate for my 1TB drives to go to waste, as I would have absolutely no need for them on my HTPC once I get the NAS up and running.
Any assistance is appreciated.
