Hi guys, just curious as to what it means when freenas sets a raid with some disks in multipath and others just as a disk?

This one is a 12bay r510 with an hba straight to the backplane.

Do you have a mix of both SATA and SAS drives in the backplane by any chance? Multipath is a feature of SAS drives, or SATA drives when interposers (designated SATAu) are used. If you have a mix of both its possible the SAS/SATAu drives are being detected multipath while the sata drives are disk only?

What HBA are you using and is it crossflashed? As I recall the R510 has the same official statement from Dell as the MD1200 I'm using - that being you can not mix SAS and SATA disks together unless interposers are used on the sata disks. However my current testing seems to indicate when using a "dumb" HBA and letting FreeNAS handle the drive operations you can mix SAS and SATA on the same backplane and controller.

This is still a configuration I am testing at the moment so if anyone else knows differently please correct me.

Only sas drives plugged into an lsi card i flashed about 5years ago and had running in one of the r710's.
By the way, you can use both sas and sata drives on the r710 r510 and the md1200, but you can only set them as separate freenas volumes though.

Hmm Im not sure why some sas drives would appear as disk only while other show as multipath. Hopefully someone else has some ideas.

I recall reading a post where someone had some sas drives that were appearing twice as 2 paths, but not recognized as multipath and they had to create the multipath labels manually. Is that any chance what your seeing or is it for sure some sas drives only getting one path while others are getting 2 along with the multipath label?

Thanks for confirming my suspicion on the sata and sas on the same backplane/controller. I was pretty sure Dell's statement on not mixing them was support from the perspective of a H7**/H8*** raid controllers, and that they work just fine as separate freenas volumes.
