I need to move my files/data from nextcloud to hold externally until I can rebuild a new nextcloud on the same device. I will be reinstalling truenas. If i reset/reinstall truenas the files will be lost becasuse the hard drives will be re-formatted...is there a way to do this transfer so I can build up the server again?

In a typical setup, the OS is on a different medium than your data so a reinstall should not wipe your data and you should be able to import the drives again after a reinstall. It is highly recommended though to make a backup in case the importing fails and you are forced to reformat.

Whilst there are surely ways to rebuild the NC databases and all to match everything exactly as before the reinstall but honestly, this is above my knowledge. I have reinstalled NC a couple of times in the past and i did always secure my data before doing so. For me, the easiest way was the connect to TrueNAS through FTP and just download the entire data-folder from NC. I then upload it into the new NC installation through the GUI after recreating the user profiles. Not very scientific but works like a charm.

Thanks for your response! This helped, I never thought of it this way... Is it possible to give more insights into the steps of how to do this? I want to reinstall truenas into promox os and run it through a VM instead of it being the standalone os...

How to do what? Get your files off the server using FTP or installing and importing? For the latter, i have no experience with running TN through a VM. All my installs have always been bare metal. I am not into VM's. They just add complexity to the equation which is something i wouldn't want for applications that i use for my business.
