I'm stuck with a 6TB SMR drive - can it be used in a pool with 7 others or should I just keep it on its own? really wanted to have an 8 drive pool with zfs2

It's really best on its own. Significant levels of ZFS write traffic tend to kill the SMR drives. Someone will doubtlessly drive by with a more complete display of pedantic explanation, but that's the quick answer.

Dang, thanks. The return window on it long passed before I heard about the SMR stuff (a while ago now, just re-organizing all my pools)

What kind of drive is it? I'd have to go look, but I thought WD had some sort of exchange program.

I'd contact WD. See if they will take it back in exchange for a CMR drive.
