Misreported volume size.

Hi all,

I've been running A small server since about freenas 8 but never really delved under the hood too much.
I just run a basic file server and a plex instance.
One thing that always bothered me Is my video storage area has never reported size correctly. It is actually a few TB.

I also notice the Type is different. This is not something I have done intentionally.

Can anyone advise me if the reporting is an easy fix?

Secondary to this I intend in the next 2 months to backup all of my data to an external cold storage drive. But would like to take the opportunity to better implement my pools if anyone would like to offer advice in this area?

Looks like you made a mistake in creating your video storage area. A "VOLUME" is for VMs or allowing iSCSI access.

Please put in the output of the following in code tags;

zfs list -t all -r main
ls /mnt/main

It's probably you put your video storage under a directory in the top level of the "main" dataset. Perhaps with "videos" with an "s" at the end.

You can determine what "video" the VOLUME is used for later, and possibly remove it if un-needed.

Thanks for reaching out to help. I had to enable SSH as the webgui console was refusing to copy the last few lines of output, but based on what I am seeing I think you are indeed correct!

Are we saying the OS isn't able to handle the volume and the subdirectory having the same name?
Presumably the solution would be rename the subdirectory, delete the zvol, then rename the subdirectory back to what it was?

Feel free to extreme hand hold on this i don't want to delete my data by accident. I don't have a backup yet.

IF its worth waiting until my backup drive arrives that's cool too =)


P:S is the below normally that messy?

In regards to the output of zfs list -t all -r main, yes, TrueNAS is normally that messy. I forget sometimes as my home Linux computers, (desktop, laptop and media server), all use ZFS but in a simpler configuration.


In regards to your media, it's easier than I thought. I was not thinking, but ZFS Volumes are not mounted per say. They are containers that could hold a file system that could then be mounted. But, it appears not to be in use at present. So, no conflict.

So, yes, you can leave the ZFS Volume "media" around, it's not hurting anything right now.

You can wait til your backup media arrives and you have performed a full backup, (with verification that it all seems to be present). Then you can see about making some subtle changes, by moving your NAS media into a dataset. Right now, it's in the parent / pool dataset. Not a real problem, just a few quirks. Like finding the size.
