Hi FreeNas Community

I've been lurking for quite a while and just recently created my first build. Thanks to many of the posts from users and information in the docs, it's been a successful project for me that I would like to continue.

In my setup one of the things that I noticed is that I quickly ran out of sata power connectors from my PSU (Corsair RM750). It has 8 which is the number of drives I installed.

I'm using an LSI raid card (IBM ServeRaid M1115), and am currently using mini-sas to 4x sata cables. I found that there are different cables that include the sata power connector as well. Dumb question, but w/ those will power fed to the drives directly from the raid card? Is that even possible, I'm assuming the raid card would get it from the motherboard?

This is what I'm currently using: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-SAS-to...reakout-Internal-Cable-19-Inch-/151643015691?

This is what I'm considering using: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010CMW6S4/?tag=ozlp-20

Anyone using something like this?

They do not provide power. If you look at the pictures you will see they have a SATA power connector on them.

Awesome thanks for the answer, so any idea what's the use case of using these connectors?

I've actually never seen them till you posted. They do not seem useful to me.

I am going to assume that you are looking at them ao you can add moer drives. If you are in need of more power, you can always get a Molex to 2x SATA cables to get more ports. As long as the cables are not uber cheap ones from China, you will be fine.

Proper SAS connectors have an extra set of pins, between where a SATA drive has power and data, therefore the connector has to be a monolithic entity (at least as far as I've seen).

It does seem that these have extra pins, so might this work?

Here's one side, you can see the metal contacts: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61L4ZgssaIL._SL1500_.jpg and here is the other side: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71pIq+vlCoL._SL1500_.jpg

Would the card be able to deliver power without using a SATA power connector from the PSU?

I do see the sata power connector on the other side, which makes me believe the earlier posts that it's not possible.

@Fuganater: For this specific instance I just need to power a switch on my case (Fractal node 804), which needs a SATA power hookup to disperse power to the case fans, so the molex to sata adapter will work fine.

I asked b/c if these connectors would work that would free up 8 sata connects on the PSU, it would free up some connects if I decide to install a few SSDs.

I dont think that these cables will work that way! I would suggest you getting some splitters like these ones this http://geizhals.eu/silverstone-cp06-a670444.html . I have used two of these in my older build and they are quite convenient!

No, never. Not going to happen, except in highly-integrated devices from big OEMs.
