My server runs TrueNAS 12.0-U7. The LSI 9300-8i runs in IT mode with the 16.00.12.00 firmware.

I am able to wipe a drive, that is failing SMART testing, when it is attached to motherboards Intel C226 SATA controller. However, trying the same on the 9300 fails. The log shows three failed write attempts, then "SCSI sense: UNIT ATTENTION asc:29,0 (Power on, reset, or bus device reset occurred).

When the server was running 12.0-U6, the server performed "an unscheduled system reboot", when I attempted the wipe of a 9300 attached drive.

I would appreciate your thoughts about this.

Thank you,
Chuck

You may have a bad LSI 9300-8i card -- I have three bad ones myself; all are Supermicro AOC-S3008L-L8e models.

Typically the LSI HBAs are quite reliable, but not always. See:

The title is misleading; users in that thread report problems with several different drive types and LSI HBA cards.

HBAs are susceptible to damage from over-heating. My guess is that my cards were damaged this way, but that's just a guess.
