Hi everyone,

I recently managed to get a supermicro 2U server with 12 HDD bays. The only thing missing is a SAS controller.

I read that the IBM M1015 would be a great choice but I can only find those cards for 120€ or more. I also read that the LSI 9211-8i would be a good choice. After some searching, I found two cheaper cards: An LSI 9205-8i (50€) and an LSI 9211-4i (75€).

My question for you now is whether one of these cards actually is a good alternative. Thanks!

Fine. Low cost is due to it only having four of the ports wired

LSI 9205-8i (50€)
I'd never heard of it, but it's apparently an SAS 2308, so it's even better than the other option you have. The price is a bit suspicious, though. Might be a fake.

Of course, the above recommendations presume you'll be using an expander, either included on the backplane or provided by you.

That is a good question and I do not have an answer for it. I can tell you though that the backplane has two SFF-8087 ports if that is what you wanted to know.

There should be a sticker on the side with the model number.

And don't go cheaper. Buy a LSI 9211-8i or M1015 and get it done. People always try to 'save money' and end up getting bit in the rear.

A 9211-4i is fine. Heck, iXsystems has sold them in FreeNAS systems. ;-)
