The old thermal goo was in terrible shape (on one it was rock hard and crusty on the other it was very very gummy).
That's unusual, but neatly explains what was happening.

Indeed, especially on two cards, but they both did come from the same seller on eBay so who knows how long they say or what kind of environment they lived in. Overnight no more blips either, so I think it's ok to call this one officially fixed now. Replacing thermal paste on cards has never been part of my troubleshooting steps until now!

Good find, Gerk. I may just redo the paste on my HBA's too. They do run hot as hell so probably not a bad idea to do it with some fresh hqs (high quality s***)!
