Login spins after upgrade

I have upgraded from 12u2 to 12u3. I let the upgrade go over night, to return to no access. I found the NIC lost it's IP address so I was able to manually set the NIC back to it's static, and rebooted from the CLI. Once the box rebooted the Samba shares were again accessible, however I am unable to log in. Using root, with either the correct password, or any other password the login screen spins indefinitely. I have re-set the root password multiple times via CLI with no success. Any ideas?
