After a bit of searching, I stumbled upon an answer I've been looking for in regards to the meaning/purpose of locking a dataset. Nothing about it that I could find in the documentation.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but when we choose encryption on a dataset, the lock state is unlocked for encrypted and accessible (decryptable), locked for encrypted.
Is there any design for locking a dataset other than if it's replicated?
Is there somewhere I can find a description?

If all you want to do is replicate the dataset, don't unlock it, replication can still handle it while locked as it replicates the encrypted blocks "as-is" and doesn't need the keys for that. If you don't provide the keys on the replica system, then the data is protected there too.
