What could cause this?

Bad cable, someone plugging a cable (network or remote device's power) on and off, power going on and off (if you're using a UPS only for the server)...

The important part is: Is it still going on?

My security reports come at 3:00 am. This morning's (Monday) security report shows three DOWN ... UP sequences -- far fewer than the day before.

This morning's (Tuesday) report contains none of these messages.

Well, that makes the transient problem theories more credible. Could it have been a mild brownout of some sort coupled with a crappy switch power supply?
