What are you trying to accomplish and on which version of FreeNAS are you trying to do it?

I want to get the latest version transmission (2.80) and minidlna (1.1.0) on freenas 8.3.1 (9.1 after release).
Since freebsd ports updated and available for a long time.

Did you find a solution already? I would also be interested in upgrading, since 2.80 has significant improvements (renaming).

There is a Transmission 2.80 PBI on http://ftp.pcbsd.org/pub/mirror/PBI/net-p2p/transmission/9/x64/ , but I don't know if the FreeNAS ones are altered in some way. If somebody (dlavigne?) could confirm that run-of-the-mill PBIs are OK, it should be as easy as uploading the PBI via the GUI.

Yup, but you have to create your own plugins jail first: http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Installing_FreeNAS®_PBIs.

I'll look into our process for providing updated versions of FreeNAS PBIs.

Thanks a lot! Just to clarify:

I have the jail already from installing Transmission 2.77. I deactivate Transmission 2.77, do I upload the new PBI via the Upload button under Plugins or would it be better to just replace the PBI somewhere?

I'd like to keep my settings, if possible. Just having a service restart with the updated PBI should be the smoothest solution.

Just to clarify your setup: are you using Plugins or did you create a Jail? These are now 2 separate things in 9.x. Or are you still on 8.x?

I am on 9.1.0 (even fixed my signature here). While upgrading from 8.3.1, I got rid of my old Transmission and also the old jail for a fresh start.

I used the Plugin method to have the jail bit_1 autocreated.

So here's the deal. If you use Plugins, you'll have to wait for a new version of the FreeNAS PBI to become available in the Plugins browser (the part that shows the list of available apps). Plugins are designed to be point and click, but we're still working out the process to automate the build of PBIs as newer versions become available.

If you create your own jails using Jails, you have much more flexibility, but you also need to have more knowledge. It's a good idea to skim through the whole Jails chapter first to see what functionality is available and to decide which type of jail and which type of software installation method best meets your needs. This chapter currently describes all available software installation methods. I've made a mental note to add how to upgrade currently installed apps.
