Hi everyone!
I want to use a Dell R 720, which has the original SAS 8 drive controller, for a FreeNAS SAN.
As I've learned from numerous sites, the drives need to be in JBOD mode, which the factory controller does not support. Although some have set it up as raid0 individual drives which I'd rather not do.

So my question is, does anyone have any experience with this controller and will it work with this server or recommend another HBA adapter.

LSI Logic Controller Card H5-25573-00 9300-8i SGL SAS 8Port 12Gb/s PCIE3.0

I'm looking for controller advice for a HBA controller for this server.

Thanks!

If the factory-installed controller is a PERC H310, it can be reflashed into a pure HBA using LSI IT mode firmware.

Other than that, the linked LSI HBA will work, although it's expensive. If you don't need SAS3 (12Gbps) support, I suggest sticking to older gear like the 9211-8i or its flashable equivalents (Dell PERC H200/H310, IBM ServeRAID M1015)

Have you read the Hardware Recommendations Guide (linked in my sig)? It covers your question.

Hard to tell what the original controller is. Is a completely stock server, a Perc H310? I am running 8 15k sas drives.

I uploaded a picture of the controller, it probably isnt a PERC 310, judging by pictures of a 310 on the internet.
I plan to use the san for 3 KVM host servers running about 25 vm's in total.
