I am thinking about installing Nextcloud in a jail instead of it's current Ubuntu Virtualbox VM. Currently, to back up the NC VM, I just export it every week, to a different machine. Not the most elegant solution, but it works, I suppose.

How do you recover jails, if, for example your entire FreeBSD/FreeNAS box was stolen or caught on fire. We will assume, of course, that the entire volume was backed up to another location.

Do you have to recreate the jail with a fresh Free*** box and move your database/files over? Or can you simply upload a backup of your config and recreate the volume?

All the data for a jail is stored between the jail dataset and your FreeNAS config file. If you have to start from scratch, all you have to do is restore your jail dataset to the same path, and restore your config, and you're in business.
