CORE is based on FreeBSD, and SCALE is based on Linux. Both are installable ISOs.

@HoneyBadger I need a free version for my lab. I just need a storage target to test replication software. Is TrueNAS Core okay?

CORE is the most mature and stable of the TrueNAS in my opinion.

Yup, it is free.

I've run it as a VM for many years. Works great for me and several others. But read the link @HoneyBadger provided you.
