Is ECC really necessary for a backup NAS

1 or 2 . I will go with ECC now that honey badger pointed me toward the ASUS M5A97 R2.0 I just couldn't find any info on ECC on non server MOBO. I always used to buy ECC for all my builds 10 yrs ago, seems that most people aren't interested in ECC anymore.

That's not true; most home users weren't interested in ECC back then either. However, back then, chipsets like the BX were destined to be both desktops and entry level servers like the ISP1100, which baked in at least support in slicon for the feature, if not in the BIOS.

These days, with the move towards virtualization, servers have turned massive ... 128GB is not that big! ... and memory protection is necessary.

Thanks for your help. In the end I found a server that was no longer being used since virtualization. Has 16 Gb ECC ram and Xeon processor + dual intel nics:D.
