Hi,
is 16GB now too little? I receive alerts "Space usage for pool "freenas-boot" is 76%. Optimal pool performance requires used space remain below 80%."
(Maybe there is a way to delete some old files, system not needed?). I have always made a update and newer new installation.

16 GB is enough. Go to System > Boot and delete old boot environments.

A USB drive - unless it's a "real SSD" connected via some USB-SATA adapter - is not recommended anymore, because thumb drives tend to fail rather frequently. Of course if you have a config backup and a spare stick for a new installation, you should be good.
