Hi, a friend asked me to fix his laptop. Apparently, he installed Freenas on his hard drive instead of the flash drive. Now the machine won't boot from either the usb drive or dvd drive. I tried a windows disk and a dban disk but nothing works. It just takes me right to a grub menu.

Thanks,

Vince

Have you tried going into the BIOS and changing the boot order?

How do I do that if it just goes right into the grub menu. It won't let me get to the bios even if I hold down F2.
Then I end up at the Freenas Console.

If you can't do it on the laptop, remove the hard disk temporarily and wipe it on another machine.

Tell your friend that laptops aren't a good choice for FreeNAS, for a lot of reasons. For starters, FreeNAS requires 8GB of RAM and ECC is recommended.

I don't want to come off as harsh here, but to be honest with you, if you can't figure out how to
boot into the laptop's BIOS, perhaps you should not be the one to help your friend???

Assuming F2 is the right key, tap rapidly instead of holding it. But double check the manual for the specific model of laptop, you might need to use a different key.

An alternative to changing the BIOS boot order setting is a one-time boot device selection menu, which is usually F12.

Not much help Dave, you didn't even tell me how to do it!!!
That's enough.

You cannot come in here and demand volunteers help you with a problem that you can resolve using Google. This isn't a freenas issue. At. All.

Actually the note says the user was "Baned."

latest

which also seems strangely appropriate.
